First night away & Green

Taylor's Refresher has these Green Cups. We went there for lunch as part of our first night away from Victoria. The cup says "This cup is made from corn, environmentally sustainable, and 100% compostable." Greenware is the company, I guess and has a website at the bottom as "f-k.com". I thought I would post a picture to show you what the cup looked like after sitting in a hot car for 3 days. It's like it melted, where as other "plastic cups" have not melted in the hot car.

A Solid Argument for Composting

"Kitchen sink disposals require lots of water to operate properly. Start a compost pile as an alternate method of disposing of food waste, instead of using a garbage disposal. Garbage disposals also can add 50 percent to the volume of solids in the sewer system or they can lead to problems with a septic tank."

The above information came from, the Water Information Program in southwestern Colorado. Not exactly a local resource but the web site had some good water saving tips. www.waterinfo.org/conservation-tips

That, along with the reduction I've seen in our garbage waste, solidifys that composting is the right thing to do. For now, just in our yard waste bin.

Composting

So I'm married to an Engineer and sometimes I can't come up with a good enough answer to his question! Erica, Emily, can you feel my pain?

So I started my little veggie and fruit compost bin to add to the yard waste bin today, and feeling quite proud of my green little self, I informed Calvin that this bin is now where we put fruit and vegetable waste and that we could dump it at the end of each day. He wondered if that was really any better than putting it down the garbage disposal. I said we're saving electricity. He said, what about the extra trips the garbage truck will make?

Thoughts?

Composting

So going off of Emily's tip I'd like to start putting food waste in the compost bin. I found a nice counter top bin at Gaiam (I'll add their website, they have tons of cool products) and Bio Bags. It looks like you can just throw the biodegradable bag into the compost. It says they decompose in about 30 days. I'm going to check with the wase co. to see if that would be ok, but I just through I'd throw it out there to see if any of you know. Also I'll be looking for a list of what can and can't go in the compost, so if you know that please share too.

Welcome Visitors!

If you're reading for the first time, it may feel a bit like you've just walked into a conversation that has been going on for awhile.

So to catch you up...

Jennifer started this blog because she was going through the process of becoming more conscious of her lifestyle choices and had decided to "go green". As she talked to her friends she quickly realized that she was not the only one interested in making changes. The blog was born. We used this as a place to discuss things we've tried and to support each other in the journey.
