Washing More Dishes by Hand

I've started to wash more dishes by hand. The dishwasher uses more water and electricity than by doing them by hand.

I took the picture to show that just by washing those 3 pots by hand I could put off running the dishwasher another half day or so.

(Thought I'd give you a break from the touchy-feely posts!)

Hmmm, I just read in "Living Green", the book Erica lent me, that it's better to do dishes in the dishwasher. Goes aganist something else I read.

Guess we need to do some more research. Sarah H.?

OK I just looked it up on Treehugger.com (my favorite Green resource BESIDES Green Mommies), and they had this to say :

"The Bonn study proves that the dishwasher uses only half the energy and one-sixth of the water, less soap too. Even the most sparing and careful washers could not beat the modern dishwasher. The study also rated the cleanliness achieved, again in favor of the washing machine (sorry grandma). There have been studies before, but this is one of the few that stands (wo)man against machine..."

BUT I still wash big pots and pans by hand because as you illustrated it opens up a lot more space for smaller dishes, you get more done per load that way it seems.

Maybe you could look up what you read originally and see if it was a newer study? This is just one study, anyone else have any thoughts?

I've also read that the dishwasher is better as long as it's full. We wash pots and pans by hand as well for the reason Sarah said. Anything that takes up a ton of space like huge bowls or strainers we usually wash by hand.

I have been washing all my big pots and pans by hand for years! And we only run the dishwasher when it gets full. Plus, I've heard the dishwasher can be pretty tough on those pots and pans. I have one medium pot that I put in the dishwasher. Over the years the non-stick stuff has worn off. The non-stick pots we got as a wedding gift, have not lost their stuff because I wash them by hand. There are times I have to run the dishwasher twice. We have ants, and they love our dishwasher! I will find dead ants on the dishes, so I wash them again to get all the guts off, only I use the quick wash to use lesser water and such for the 2nd time around.

Welcome Visitors!

If you're reading for the first time, it may feel a bit like you've just walked into a conversation that has been going on for awhile.

So to catch you up...

Jennifer started this blog because she was going through the process of becoming more conscious of her lifestyle choices and had decided to "go green". As she talked to her friends she quickly realized that she was not the only one interested in making changes. The blog was born. We used this as a place to discuss things we've tried and to support each other in the journey.
